Pit Bulls Don't Kill Babies, Their Teeth Do

A coworker recently posed the question,"With a new baby on the way, what are you going to do about those dogs of yours?" I was a little perplexed, so I asked him to elaborate. "You can't have those dogs around a baby" he said, "Especially that pit bull. You'll see". I'm assuming he said 'you'll see' because he believes I'm blind and not because he's never owned a pit bull or a baby. Yes, you own babies.

I suppose I hadn't thought about it, though. Bekki and I tolerate the dogs and their vicious behaviour, but why should our child have to? I guess I could take them in the backyard and fill them with buckshot. I could line them up against the fence and do it execution style. As long as I don't place their bodies in the Indian burial ground, I should be alright. I watched Pet Cemetery. I know what happens there.

Or, or, this is just a thought. . . I could do nothing. I'm just throwing that out there. Call me crazy. Bekki grew up on a farm with dogs and chickens and dinosaurs and she turned out alright. There weren't any pit bulls, though. And I did hear once that pit bulls and children don't mix. And I am one to believe whatever someone tells me as long as they sound convincing. That's why I stay away from that Indian burial ground. Dog zombies suck.

I've never owned a pit bull and I don't have any personal experience with them, but a quick google search provides these recent links:

The majority of the dogs may be docile and sweet, but if it were my child I don't know if I would take the chance. It only takes a moment for your life to be turned upside down...by any number of life altering events...a sad fact I know all too well.

You know your dog better than anyone, I am sure that you will take everything into consideration and make the right choice for your family.

I don't have any experience with dog zombies either...

**Wu Tang is for the children??**

I read both articles and neither said which breed of dog did the attack. Pit Bull is an umbrella term for over a dozen different dogs. Considering these dogs and their look-a-likes (Great Danes, Boxers, Labs and Mastiffs) are among the most popular dogs in the country, it's only fitting that they commit the most offenses.

A more rational response to fearing pit bulls would be to fear all dogs. Any dog is capable of an attack. Any dog.

And, yes, Wu Tang is for the children.

my daughter found a pit bull on the side of the road two years ago, starving. she brought her home, named her (loki) and hand fed her until she was healthy.

loki thinks my daughter is the center of the universe.

i worried about loki around the baby... you do worry about dogs around babies... then, when z was lying on the sofa, sucking on his binky, loki walked over before anyone could do anything, licked his face, and laid her head on his tummy.

and sighed in happiness.

yes, you watch a child around a dog.. they tend to do odd things like investigate ears and eyes and mouths... but, after five kids and a multitude of dogs, we've yet to have a bite.

besides, dachshunds and cocker spaniels are the worst biters listed.

enjoy the whole soon to be blended family.

But the pitbulls ARE your babies!
I'd be more worried about (harmless) jealousy and feelings of neglect.

Peter, I've considered putting Lukas up for adoption. Well, he will have to be born first. But after that, he's definitly going up for adoption.

Trust your instincts.
Parenting instincts are powerful tools. They'll kick in when Baby DeAntonio arrives and you'll figure it out.

:o)

It's all good.
